Our Charmanter CHARDONNAY Ried Schilling 2018 and our Kugelberg GRÜNER VELTLINER Ried Kugelberg 2018 won one of the coveted silver medals at the DWWA (Decanter World Wine Awards) in 2019 - and that with 90 points!

Elegant nose reminiscent of pears, green apples and ripe apricots. On the palate, the aromas are balanced with elegant acidity and a good length.“ – so the description of the expert jury for our Chardonnay.

Opulent and rich with aromas of apricots, candied orange peel, honeysuckle and peach. Good weight on the palate with fresh acidity balancing out the rich flavours. Textural with a savoury finish.“ – that was the great rating of the experts for our Kugelberg.

We have submitted 5 wines - 5 wines were awarded. Because also our Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Grüner Veltliner 2018, Glücksmoment ZWEIGELT Ried Schilling 2017 and the Hommage ZWEIGELT Reserve 2017 were awarded. With bronze. Which is a really good result given the very strict assessment.

Kangaroos in Austria. Zweigelt in Australia.

No kangaroos in Austria, as if. There are also Zweigelts in Australia. Zweigelt by scions from Georg Weinwurm's vineyards.

But one after the other. Georg Weinwurms wandering years once led him to Australia to the family winery Andrew Peace. The apprenticeship passed, the friendship remained. Since then, annual visits have strengthened the relationship between the winegrowing families from Austria and Australia.

What Georg took with him, apart from the friendship from Australia, was the Syrah. What Andrew took with him from Austria was the Zweigelt. After several years of strict quarantine in Australia, these scoins were finally planted. A joint distribution partner was also quickly found. And so wine lovers in Australia can now purchase the genuine Austrian Zweigelt Glücksmoment in a package with Andrews Australian Zweigelt. Because if there are kangaroos in Austria, then there should also be Zweigelt in Australia.

Hommage, Abendrot (sunset glow) and Herzblut (heart´s blood): If it´s red wine – it must be WEINWURM´

A Weinviertel wine grower does not live from Veltliner alone. But to vinificate red wines at the same quality level as whites makes Weinwurms extremely proud.

Particularly our Zweigelt Hommage 15 won brilliant ratings in the Falstaff Red Wine Guide. With 91 points Peter Moser described our former Hommage ZWEIGELT Reserve 2015 with „inviting berry fruit“, „mineral finish“ and finally as „multi-faceted food pairing“.

As if this wouldn´t be enough reason for crows of delight it has to be mentioned that this Zweigelt is only vinificated in perfect years and, up tp now, every vintage has convinced professionals and connosieurs alike. Have a look at a short survey: 90 points at the IWC Chicago in 2006, Salon winner of the category Zweigelt in 2009, listed in the Salon Austrian Wine in 2011 and with 92,6 points confirmed as best Austrian red wine in Germany at the Mundus Vini followed by the vintage 2012 winning the Premium Gold Prague Wine Challenge and IWC Tasting Chicago Gold, and now the 2015 vintage with 91 points at the Falstaff tasting, a gold medal in Frankfurt at the International Trophy and described by Jancis Robinson as follows: „„Deliciously fresh and one of the most food friendly wines I have had this year.“ In short: Weinwurms´ homage to the variety Zweigelt.

It would never cross our minds to rejoice about our grape diversity if we had only one excellent red wine to present. In fact there are three. At Least. The Abendrot SYRAH Ried Schilling 2016, a variety which captured Georg Weinwurm´s imagination during his practical year in Australia, and the Herzblut MERLOT Ried Schilling 2016 were Mr. Moser worth 90 points and in addition a best-buy-recommendation.

We produce Merlot since the early 90ies and it has developed to our second important red wine behind the Zweigelt. At the beginning of 2000 we have started to plant Syrah. Our Syrah matures in used French 220 l for one year – Barrique barrels.

Rare varieties in Austria, even more rare in the Weinviertel district and rarest with high ratings by internationally known experts – that makes us happy! And our two exotic varieties could be even capable of more if you think about what Mr. Moser stated: they are „at the beginning of their development“. What could be expected in one, two or three years?
Therefore, Georg Weinwurm´s secret tipp: ensure your quantity of Australian Abendrot and Georg Weinwurm´s personal Herzblut right now.

Last but not least we have to point out the forth moment of happiness. With 89 points the Glücksmoment ZWEIGELT Ried Schilling 2017 (moment of happiness) was included in the very-good-ratings. Peter Moser descernes  bitter chocolade, herbal spices, cherries, freshness and a tiny pinch of salt in this Zweigelt.

To get excellent ratings at this year´s Gruner Veltliner Grand Prix made us really happy but to succeed with our red wines aswell proves that Weinwurms´variety range qualifies us as one of Austria´s top vintners.

What wine expert Jancis Robinson says about our wines

Weingut WEINWURM
In December 2017 we sent a selection of our wines to Jancis Robinson to Manchester (GB).
Here is the wine rating:

Weissburgunder Reserve 2015
Looks more golden, smells rounder and deeper. Brioche and buttery and lychee syrup. Rich and plump, moving with sensuous laziness around the mouth – the perfect wine for a roasted chicken and caramelised parsnips. (TC) 16.5

Like their Grüner, lightly spritzy. Pears and cream and lots of lemon zest, with a bit of white citrus pith grated in for good measure. There’s a weight and a hint of richness, a hint of shimmer. Very neat, lovely spread and presence on the mid palate, and pretty good length. (TC) 16.5

Grapey and floral, elderflower on the nose and palate with a green-grassy, green-gooseberry-like acidity in the middle. Dry. Finishes softly. (TC) 16.3

Very light, fine spritz in the glass and on the palate. Smells, and tastes, like a bowl of fresh chopped cucumber and dill in Greek yogurt. With a tiny bit of pear sweetness, and pear graininess. Rounded and almost cushioned in the middle, but more stony and defined toward the end. (TC) 16.3

Smells of apricot jam and melted butter. You could spread this on a hot scone with a dollop of cream. Lusciously sweet, apricots dripping in syrup, but with a decent wash of acidity to back it up. (TC) 16.3

Zweigelt Reserve 2015
Lightly scented. Black cherries across the palate with a very upright, foot-tapping acidity. Very smart tannins tapering to the finish, slim-fit and elegant. Impeccably smooth with a purity to the dark fruit. Little bit of vanilla oak as the wine warms up to room temperature. Deliciously fresh and one of the most food-friendly wines I’ve had this year. (TC) 16.5
