All good things are 5 not 3 - 5 times in a row we can count our wines among the best of Austria. Quite official.
At the hardest national competition more than 7000 wines are tasted in a multi-stage procedure by a very strict jury we gained the award the 5th time.
Therefore we can count our winery among the "Best of the Best" in Austria.

KUGELBERG SCORES AGAIN!

History repeats itself! Just like last year, our Grüner Veltliner Ried Kugelberg won the Grand Gold Medal at Valtické vinné trhy contest - one of the most prestigious wine competitions in Czech Republic. Valtice is considered the capital of wine in the Czech Republic and is also the cradle and seat of the nationwide Salon. However, it wasn´t only Kugelberg that nailed it! Our other wines were also successful! These won a gold medal:

11.200 wines from 1.500 winemakers out of 41 countries faced this Wine Challenge. In the  Category "Welschiesling" we took 2nd place.
By the way the same rating as 20 years ago at the first AWC ever.

Our SPITZBUB Welschriesling Ried Schilling 2019 doesn´t come down the winners stairs!
First finalist at the NÖ Wein with finally a 2nd place, than SALON 2020 and lately the 2nd place at the AWC Vienna.

PRAGUE WINE TROPHY is an international wine competition. In terms of the number of evaluated samples it is the largest international wine competition in the Czech Republic. Competition is organized by Ing. Sarka Duskova, DipWSET & Weinakademiker and has four rounds (April, June, September, October).
Jury members are chosen by organizer and consists qualified domestic and international tasters, oenologists, wine sellers and professional journalists. Wines are evaluated on the international 100-point scale, using blind tasting system. The year-round competition is concluded by great Galadegustation in the very center of Prague at the Jalta Hotel on Wenceslas Square.

At the moment we have sent six wines so far: FUNdament Rivaner, Weinzigartiger Roter Muskateller, FUNdament Rosé, Schilling Grüner Veltliner, Kugelberg Grüner Veltliner and Charmanter Chardonnay and all of them received Prague Gold medal.
Well, not for nothing is the capital of the Czech Republic called Golden Prague…

6 finalists in 4 years as well as 9 Lower Austria Gold Medals in 2020 - Lower Austria Wine Award again a great success.
 
Out of more than 6000 tasted wines, 18 provincial winners were chosen by a top-class jury and about 150 wines made it into the "circle of the finalists" - as well as our two wines

But that's not all. 13 wines were submitted - 9 received the Lower Austrian Gold Award and 2 of them are our finalists.
We are proud to count ourselves once again among Lower Austria's wine elite. In the last 4 years we have made it to the final with 6 wines and even received 36 gold awards in total.

At home in Austria, beloved and appreciated all over the world, more and more winegrowers are daring to cultivate our national grape variety Gruner Veltliner. This list is headed by Australia and New Zealand, followed by the Czech Republic, Germany and South Tyrol.

The best of the best were determined during a tasting organized by the Vinaria.
WThe winners were chosen in the course of a blind tasting in cooperation with the Australian Winestate Magazine, conducted by renowned tasters (including Vinaria Editor-in-Chief Peter Schleimer and Shane Haris, wine juror and winemaker from Australia).

In the classic category, we took 4th place with our two single vineyard Gruner Veltliners (Kugelberg Gruner Veltliner 2018) and 6th place (Schilling Gruner Veltliner 2018)
That is something we are proud of and we would like to toast with you. In this spirit - cheers!

The approximately 100 best wineries in Austria after strict selection by the jury - over 400 wines - the 12 best tasters in Germany - evaluation with the 100-point system in a blind tasting.
These are the key data of the 1st Single Vineyard Cup with Austrian wines following the example of the successful Vineyard Site Cups of Gourmet Worlds in Germany initiated by Niko Rechenberg and Serhat Aktas.

With 91 points, our Charming Chardonnay Ried Schilling has won the variety victory for Chardonnay 2018. We are proud of this. Very proud indeed.
 That we rank among the best with our single vineyard wines is once again confirmed by the 91 points our Gruner Veltliner Ried Schilling 2018 and the 89 points our Schmatz Gemischter Satz Ried Schilling 2018 were awarded!

No kangaroos in Austria, as if. There are also Zweigelts in Australia. Zweigelt by scions from Georg Weinwurm's vineyards.

But one after the other. Georg Weinwurms wandering years once led him to Australia to the family winery Andrew Peace. The apprenticeship passed, the friendship remained. Since then, annual visits have strengthened the relationship between the winegrowing families from Austria and Australia.

What Georg took with him, apart from the friendship from Australia, was the Syrah. What Andrew took with him from Austria was the Zweigelt. After several years of strict quarantine in Australia, these scoins were finally planted. A joint distribution partner was also quickly found. And so wine lovers in Australia can now purchase the genuine Austrian Zweigelt Glücksmoment in a package with Andrews Australian Zweigelt. Because if there are kangaroos in Austria, then there should also be Zweigelt in Australia.

Our Charmanter CHARDONNAY Ried Schilling 2018 and our Kugelberg GRÜNER VELTLINER Ried Kugelberg 2018 won one of the coveted silver medals at the DWWA (Decanter World Wine Awards) in 2019 - and that with 90 points!

„Elegant nose reminiscent of pears, green apples and ripe apricots.  On the palate, the aromas are balanced with elegant acidity and a good  length.“ – so the description of the expert jury for our Chardonnay.

„Opulent and rich with aromas of apricots, candied orange peel,  honeysuckle and peach. Good weight on the palate with fresh acidity  balancing out the rich flavours. Textural with a savoury finish.“ – that was the great rating of the experts for our Kugelberg.

We have submitted 5 wines - 5 wines were awarded. Because also our Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Grüner Veltliner 2018, Glücksmoment ZWEIGELT Ried Schilling 2017 and the Hommage ZWEIGELT Reserve 2017 were awarded. With bronze. Which is a really good result given the very strict assessment.

The Decanter World Wine Awards are one of the most important and prestigious wine competitions in the world. The tasters are well-known sommeliers and Master of Wine - 280 in total, blind tasting up to 16,000 wines from around the world.

Of all the participating Austrian winegrowers, only 91 silver medals and 6 gold medals were awarded this year. - We are proud to be part of it!

Our FUNdament Grüner Veltliner 2018 is SALON National Champion 2019! So he is the best Grüner Veltliner in the category `Grüner Veltliner klassisch´. Naturally, Weinviertel is happy about that, because it is our parade variety. Hardly any winemaker in the Weinviertel does not have at least one Grüner Veltliner on offer. We have 4. And of that, one more SALON wine has become. Our Kugelberg 2018 is one of only 270 salon wines this year.

"And with such a difficult vintage! ..." The year 2018, it was hotter than ever before, Georg Weinwurm had to fight for the acidity. It was worth it!

We were already SALON National Champion in 2011. At that time with our Zweigelt Reserve 2009. What the Grüner Veltliner with the white wines is the Zweigelt with the red wines. The most important wine variety among red wines in Austria with the largest cultivated area. That makes us very proud! Nobody has yet managed to become national winner of SALON with these two varieties.


It is a long way to the victory. There are some tasting rounds in Lower Austria to pass first. A maximum of 188 wines from around 6,000 make it from the state award to the SALON final tasting. Then the best 3-5 wines of each category are tasted again and the winner determined.

The Kugelberg here in Dobermannsdorf shines in GrandGold. But don't worry, it's not blinding. On the contrary, it's quite honest. What shines there is the honest GRUNER VELTLINER Ried Kugelberg.

After being accepted into the SALON this year, it has now also received Grand Gold at the Valtice Wine Fair. With 91 points scoring as second best Grüner Veltliner in the Czech Republic's wine capital - that's something! Especially because the Valtice Wine Fair in the Czech Republic is like Wimbledon in tennis.

And because our winemaker Georg Weinwurm proves with this award that he knows what the Gruner Veltliner needs even in such hot years as 2018. Because this variety does not like heat at all.

But not only the Gruner Veltliner from the site Kugelberg shines in our neighbour country. The gold medal goes to WEINWURM's rogue WELSCHRIESLING Ried Schilling 2018, Charming CHARDONNAY Ried Schilling 2018 and again a Veltliner, Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Grüner Veltliner 2018.

You asked for it. But so did we. We will plant an additional vineyard for the Red Muscat. It's just a very special variety, of which we all want more. And because we WEINWURMs are committed to the diversity of varieties anyway, we like it even more.

Intensive years lie ahead. Such a young vineyard needs to be nurtured and cared for. But as parents of small children we are used to that. Rest and sleep are something for beginners. That's why we already know for sure: 2023 will be a great vintage! Simply must. Because then the first harvest will take place, the virgin harvest.
