They are ripe! The grapes of our young yineyards are ready for harvesting. This year we started harvesting as early as never before. And as it should be in a family estate every one played his part.

Mama Hermine has the overview in the vineyard. And not just at harvest time!
Brother Helmut and niece Simona help at the farm.

Two Bronze Medals at the International Wine Challenge

On a nationwide level, our Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Gruner Veltliner 2017 belongs to Austria´s top wines, that´s what the Salon Austrian Wine says. On a regional level, our Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Gruner Veltliner 2017 belongs to the region´s top wines, that´s what the Lower Austria Wine and the Poysdorf Wine Parade say.

It´s phantastic to come out on top of 1000s of top wines. But the international  competition is even more challenging, even more diverse. Thus, two Bronze Medals at the International Wine Challenge approve that Great Britain classifies our Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Grüner Veltliner 2017 and Liebkind WHITE BURGUNDY Single Vineyard Schilling 2017 as one of the top wines worldwide. Additionally our Hommage ZWEIGELT Reserve 2015 is one of the wines recommended wine by the IWC.

The International Wine Challenge is one of the largest wine rating events in the world. And one of the most precious and important. To be awarded a medal the wine has to undergo three tasting rounds with at least 10 educated tasters. Vintage, grape variety and region are known, apart from this the tastings are absolutely blind. Seen from that angle we consider it a great honour to rank among the best, not only on a national and regional but also on an international level.

Bacchus Trophy for Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Gruner Veltliner 2017

A god for nearly godfull wines. No, we wouldn´t go so far. But we have reason to be proud of the highest prize the Poysdorf Wine Parade has to award. This year our Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Gruner Veltliner 2017 was awarded one of only 19 sought-after Bacchus Trophies at Austria´s largest regional wine rating event. And that´s not all: 2016  our Zweigelt Reserve 2012 was among the trophy wines, in 2014 the Weinviertel DAC and in the years 2012 and 2010 the White Burgundy.

If this makes you believe that so many trophies would propitiate the God of the Wine, you are wrong. Two tasting commisions consisting of certified tasters and representatives of the Regional Winegrower´s Associations Mistelbach and Gänserndorf rate the more than 1.100 presented wines in the course of a blind tasting. The highest rated wines are again evaluated in the minutest detail during a final tasting round until 19 are left in the basket and gain the trophy.

That´s why the Poysdorf Wine Parade calls those wines „the best of the best“ in the whole region Mistelbach, Gänserndorf, West Slovakia and South Moravia. To belong to the not even 2% of the best has to be celebrated in a bacchanalian way: with a bottle of Meinviertel Weinviertel DAC Gruner Veltliner 2017. Celebrate with us!

13 is a lyckonummer. Since 2006, thirtee years in a row, our wines were accepted at the SALON Austria Wine, the championship of Austrian Wine. This year we have even produced two SALON wines: the Meinviertel WEINVIERTEL DAC Meinviertel 2017 and the Spitzbub WELSCHRIESLING Spitzbub 2017.

Our Weinviertel DAC was accepted at the SALON already fo the second time. But the Welschriesling premieres in the liga of Austria´s 270 best wines. In fact, only 270 wines from Austria make it through the multistage tasting. It is not without reason that the SALON is regarded the hardest wine rating in Austria. We are really proud to be continously admitted every year since 2006, and, as a matter of fact, even with more than one wine, just as this year. And I almost forgot to mention: the Zweigelt Reserve was already SALON winner. SALON winners represent the 16 absolutely best wines in Austria.

That´s luck: you can be sure that WEINWURMs wines rank among the absolutely best in Austria and are above all of consistent quality.

Good Will - Much Skill – NÖ WEIN 2018

150 out of 5000. No, that´s not again one of the hardly feasible lotteries. In fact, it stands for the Lower Austrian Wine Prize. And furthermore, it has nothing to do with luck, in contrast to the lottery. A good deal more with terroir and skills, with the knowhow how to produce excellent wines. With experience and the foresight to manage the foreseeable drought stress in time; definitely a challenge in 2017. Well, and with a bit of luck two wines of one winery reach the finals of the Lower Austrian Wine. That ist o say, the luck to own a winery directly in Dobermannsdorf where deep loess meets fertile black earth and warm Pannonian climate cool, continental air streams, a combination which creates perfect conditions for top wines.

This year, the Lower Austrian Wine Prize selected 150 finalists out of more than 5.000 wines handed in by 908 wineries. Weinwurms Spitzbub Welschriesling Ried Schilling 2017 and Meinviertel Weinviertel DAC Grüner Veltliner 2017 are two of those 150 top wines of Lower

Austria evaluated in the course of various really blind tastings. Furthermore, our Welschriesling came out as the forth best of its variety and our Meinviertel among the 25 best Gruner Veltliners of the category „light“. You have to try yourself? Come on, we are happy to welcome you at the winery.

For the first time this year, we have participated in the FRANKFURT INTERNATIONAL TROPHY and are delighted to have received a GOLD and SILVER medal!

At the beginning of April, more than 2.250 products from 40 countries were tasted in Frankfurt am Main.

GOLD -  for our Zweigelt Reserve 2015

This Zweigelt Reserve is one of the masterpieces of Georg Weinwurm and a hommage to former generations. Accidentally planted in the early 50ies, this wine mirrors the aspiration to pursue an unconventional path with the highest standards in mind. Produced of selected grapes, matured for 12 months in Barrique barrels, full of character, fruit and rafinesse. We have been producing continous quality for years and gained a lot of awards with this exceptional wine.

A rainbow of aromas, frish, crisp and young. A FUNdamental companion to great parties and small victories, pairing light deserts and profound discussions, for lust and love, for you and me. Rooted in the fertile earth of the Weinviertel, meticulously vinificated by winemaker Georg Weinwurm.
Georg Weinwurm masters the art of winemaking and proves that excellent wines have not necesseraly be expensive. The Gruner Veltliner of our newcomer series FUNdament is a young, crisp wine which has honestly deserved the silver medal.

Have a look at the new descriptions on our back labels! For some wines we use the new bottles with a new design right now. We will talk about this in more detail during the next weeks.

The spring can come!

The spring can come - our vineyards are ready for the new season!

What has happened? The most elaborate work in the vineyard year - the pruning - is done. With 100 working hours per hectare, we were again very busy this year. Likewise also the first quality step was set. Low yield - but special quality - our approach, which corresponds exactly to our philosophy.

Currently we bind each bow by hand to the cord wire to promote a uniform sprouting and hopefully harvest healthy grapes later on. The late frost should spare us this year. Much hope for a lot of rain. So we hope for normal Weinviertel weather as we are used to.

January is almost over ...

January is almost over. Winter months like these, however, are anything but recreational periods for the winemaker, because in a winery like ours, a lot already happens in the first quarter.

In the vineyard, the pruning takes place - a first measure with great influence on the quality of the next vintage.

There was a lot going on in the cellar - we have already bottled the first new vintages. Red Muscat, Chardonnay and Gemischter Satz are available again!

The 2017er presents itself with an excellent quality. The dryness during the summer has sorted our vines and reduced the quantity, but this has led to a first-class quality of the remaining grapes. The cool and rainy weather in September has also ensured a nice acidity.

Convince yourself and try one of our new vintage wines in 2017. You have the opportunity to do so at one of our wine presentations in March.

What wine expert Jancis Robinson says about our wines

Weingut WEINWURM
In December 2017 we sent a selection of our wines to Jancis Robinson to Manchester (GB).
Here is the wine rating:

Weissburgunder Reserve 2015
Looks more golden, smells rounder and deeper. Brioche and buttery and lychee syrup. Rich and plump, moving with sensuous laziness around the mouth – the perfect wine for a roasted chicken and caramelised parsnips. (TC) 16.5

Like their Grüner, lightly spritzy. Pears and cream and lots of lemon zest, with a bit of white citrus pith grated in for good measure. There’s a weight and a hint of richness, a hint of shimmer. Very neat, lovely spread and presence on the mid palate, and pretty good length. (TC) 16.5

[link:3]Roter Muskateller Ried Schilling 2016[/link:3]
Grapey and floral, elderflower on the nose and palate with a green-grassy, green-gooseberry-like acidity in the middle. Dry. Finishes softly. (TC) 16.3

[link:10]Grüner Veltliner Ried Schilling 2016[/link:10]
Very light, fine spritz in the glass and on the palate. Smells, and tastes, like a bowl of fresh chopped cucumber and dill in Greek yogurt. With a tiny bit of pear sweetness, and pear graininess. Rounded and almost cushioned in the middle, but more stony and defined toward the end. (TC) 16.3

[link:11]Weissburgunder Ausbruch 2015[/link:11]
Smells of apricot jam and melted butter. You could spread this on a hot scone with a dollop of cream. Lusciously sweet, apricots dripping in syrup, but with a decent wash of acidity to back it up. (TC) 16.3

Zweigelt Reserve 2015
Lightly scented. Black cherries across the palate with a very upright, foot-tapping acidity. Very smart tannins tapering to the finish, slim-fit and elegant. Impeccably smooth with a purity to the dark fruit. Little bit of vanilla oak as the wine warms up to room temperature. Deliciously fresh and one of the most food-friendly wines I’ve had this year. (TC) 16.5
